quodlibet

The latin meaning of quodlibet is "what you please" and refers in common usage to a nice point, a subtle or debatable point. (the term has an elaborate philosphical pedigree, and even today philosophy departments allow students to pursue quodlibet studies) In music, a quodlibet is a humorous medley, an incongruous combination of well-known melodies.

Giorgio Agamben takes up the term in The Coming Community, using the Italian term qualqunque, similar to the French quelconque, and translated as "whatever."

Agamben uses this term to develop a sense of singularity that is neither particular nor general, neither individual nor generic, but simply such as it is. This singularity is whatever you want, that is lovable. "The lover desires the as only insofar as it is such -- this is the lover's particular fetishism." (p.2)
