In The Practice of Everyday Life, Michel de Certeau proposes an antidiscipline of tactics, similar to Michel Foucault's analysis of microtechnologies, but focussed on the resistant rather than the dominant. (see also molar / molecular)
Of course, the distinction between strategy and tactics is derived from warfare. It is based on a distinction between general ideas about objectives and specific ways of achieving them. Many contemporary critics, suspicious of large-scale formations, have focussed on the smaller scale, both as sites of resistance, and as enabling fine-grained analysis.
For de Certeau, political, economic, and scientific rationality has been constructed on the strategic model, a calculus of force-relationships which assumes a place of its own, its "proper" place with a distinct exterior. (its competitors, adversaries, "objects" of research, etc.) This "proper" place is a triumph over time, a mastery of time through the foundation of an autonomous place. It is also a mastery of places through sight, making possible a panoptic practice. (see visible / articulable)
If overall strategies are representational spectacles, local tactics are opaque, camouflaged like insects or plants, examples of "hunter's cunning," what the Greeks called "metis." (the ruses of Odysseus) Like wit, it is a trickery, that takes advantage of our spontaneous laxness in making distinctions.
Tactics are "the ingenious ways in which the weak make use of the strong," determined by an absence of power. A tactic insinuates itself into the other's place, always on the watch for opportunities in time. For de Certeau, this is the central feature of Everyday life, which "poaches" in countless ways on the property of others. cultural "consumers" through their "enunciations," their rhetoric, and metaphors, appropriate and reappropriate the strategic structures of technical systems to manipulate and enjoy them. Dwelling, reading, talking, dwelling, cooking are poetic forms of "bricolage," a "making do" whose political dimension has as its goal a therapeutic for deteriorating social relations.
